LAST had a chat with Kev to find out what made him pen the book, the effort behind it, whether he likes Terry and June and what is the biggest animal he thinks he could singlehandedly clingfilm to a lamp post.
Hi Kev. So whats your book about?
Sorry first of all can I say what a big fan of LAST I am?
Yep
You relaunching, and City fans singing ‘Shit on the Villa’ at Swansea, were the final confirmations I needed that all was truly well in the world again. To use a rap analogy, like all lower middle class men in their 40s would, you going away was a bit like Tupac and Biggie being killed: it opened up new spaces and lanes for the likes of Jay Z (which is me in this clumsy scenario, you being Biggie, though less morbidly obese and dead). What was the question? Oh yeah, it’s framed on the 2025/26 season without being a boring list of events, but it’s also about this unique band of players, who are unlikely champions in many ways. And then what drives the book is family, friends and fans. Coventry City has weaved its way through all our lives, and I still get emotional thinking about it all, randomly watching the Bobby Thomas header at Blackburn over and over at 4am.
LAST has been called a lot of things in its time but not Tupac or Biggie, we'll take that. What inspired you to write the book?
You just want to move people with words, really. Many say they’ve cried reading my stuff, sometimes laughed out loud, often both. That’s the best feeling. Not going to say I’m Jesus, necessarily, but he did that thing with water and I turn words into emotion. As promotion began to look more and more likely I realised I had thousands of words already on various players, which had been very well received by fans, so thought it would be nice to put it all together into something more special and lasting. In The Simpsons there is an ALL NEW KRUSTY SHOW and a voiceover kicks in “53% new footage” - if you’ve had so much time on your hands to read many of my blogs already then that may ring a little true for my book. Normally I’d have quit by now too, talked myself out of it, but the memory of a friend and cov fan Rich Bunt - in whose memory it is written and funds for his charity it will help raise - meant I had to see it through for him if no one else.
How long has it taken you to put together?
I’ve spent the last 3 months solidly writing and refining, adding and subtracting. Then it has fallen on people who actually know what they are doing - proof readers and designers - to give it life. It’s nearly there and, in the worst form of marketing ever, I’ll be glad to never look at it again once it’s finally over the line. I doubt any author has ever simultaneously been writing about scallop batches while negotiating the rights to a Philip Larkin poem, but at least I can safely say the end result will be absolutely ME, for better or worse.
You raised over £5k on Kickstarter! Where can people buy it if they missed that?
Reaching the £5,000 Kickstarter target with 9 days to spare was genuinely insane. Maybe I thought it would be a heroic, valiant attempt that fell short, or I’d have to donate loads myself anonymously to suggest I had more friends, but the fact so many fans have backed it, called my bluff to actually get it written and published, I’ll always be amazed about and thankful for. People can now pre-order at this link and it's certainly more poor planning than hard sell but there genuinely is a limited print run on this book so once they are gone they are gone!
Any thoughts of a sequel when we qualify for Europe this season?
**** that! It was a dream in life to write a book but never again :) In all seriousness I have a different thing in the works about connections and life and intention and anxiety which couldn't be more unlike the football one - in the Venn diagram of people interested in both books probably only my mum will be in the middle. Cov will get into Europe in the next few years but I will likely leave it to real authors like Rich Chamberlain to chronicle that.
LAST hear's you have a bit of a journey to get to the CBS?
Loch Lomond mate, an 11 hour round trip from 'home games'. Don't think you should get extra loyalty points for that, necessarily. I set up SBA Scotland Supporters Club three years ago, which now has over 60 members.
Prediction for this season?
I'm pessimistic by nature when it comes to Cov. Muscle memory. After Norwich away I thought we'd bottled it. But weirdly, now we're finally up, I have bizarre confidence in us getting it right, that knocking on the door for a few years has primed us to be ready. On one hand I see the Premier League as insurmountable, on another I see Sunderland finish 7th. I'll go 13th with a strong run in the league cup. It also doesn't especially bother me if it goes wrong, given how low we've been. We can handle absolutely anything now.
Whose your favourite all time player?
Cov wise, Roland Nilsson. Totally and utterly immaculate. I was in awe from the corner of the East Stand at Highfield Road as a JSB. Beyond that it's always players with edge, Noel Whelan, David Thompson, Gus Hamer and the most recent love of my life Tats Sakamoto.
Whats your favourite City match?
The Old Five at Bolton in 1998, or beating Chelsea with them playing in our away shirts. Most recently the 2-1 win over Reading in 2021, Matty Godden's 98th minute winner, as we were finally home and the atmosphere was incredible. It was like an alchemy between fans and club again, a time to move on and forward.
Villa or Leicester?
Due to my dad's work we moved to Leicester during my youth and they were winning things under Martin O'Neil at the time. Horrendous. But I'm genuine friends with many Leicester fans from my school days and I think it is out of respect for them that I have only laughed at their demise for several weeks and restricted myself to liking or sharing two or three offensive memes about them per calendar month.
Villa on the other hand, it would have been far easier to come out as absolutely anything else to my dad except a Villa fan. I know it's a one-sided rivalry for the most part, and even that has been paused a quarter century, but there remains no one I'd rather beat more.
Terry and June or The Good Life?
I'm not familiar with either, which I imagine to be unforgivable? (LAST considered terminating the interview at this stage) The greatest thing I will ever see is The Office. Nearly every day of Cov's 25 years in exile I have thought about it and quoted it somewhere. Sort of natural, by now. Cherish it, really.
What's the biggest animal you could singlehandedly clingfilm to a lamp post?
I'm glad you brought this up and not enough interviews do. Probably why journalism is dying on its arse. My first thought is something without opposable thumbs to restrict their ability to free themselves, certainly not an orangutan or anything with long arms. I'll say a lamb I think, though in truth I always have issues with cling film and would probably throw it away in a rage pre strapping because I can't properly unravel the bastard. Once in our youth we did tie a friend to a lamppost with cello tape but this wasn't single handed. If it were my answer would have been a 5ft 5in Leicester fan.
